Stop Lightning From Destroying Your Electronics
If you don’t have a whole-house surge protector in Wake Forest, NC, you’re gambling with thousands of dollars worth of electronics every time it storms.
We’ve been installing whole-house surge protectors since 2012, right around when that massive storm knocked out power to half of Wake Forest for three days. The power coming back on actually caused more damage than the outage—huge voltage spikes when Duke Energy restored service.
Why Wake Forest Homes Need Whole-House Surge Protectors
Wake Forest gets hit with serious thunderstorms every summer. Lightning doesn’t even have to hit your house directly to cause problems. When it strikes power lines or transformers anywhere in your area, that surge travels through the wiring straight to your outlets.
Those little power strip surge protectors you buy at Target? They help a little bit but they can’t handle the big surges. A direct lightning strike sends thousands of volts through your lines. Your $15 power strip isn’t stopping that.
A whole-house surge protector installs right at your electrical panel and protects everything in your home. TVs, computers, appliances, HVAC system, wifi router—all of it stays safe when the power goes crazy.
What Happens During a Power Surge
Power surges happen fast. One second everything’s normal, next second your TV won’t turn on. Sometimes you smell burning plastic. Sometimes stuff just stops working and you don’t know why.
We see it all the time in the neighborhoods around Heritage and Durham Road. Someone calls because their microwave died, dishwasher’s acting weird, and the garage door opener won’t work. All after a storm the night before. That’s surge damage, and it adds up quick.
Your home electronics aren’t designed for voltage spikes. They’re built for steady 120 volts. When 600 volts suddenly hits them, circuits fry. Sometimes it kills devices instantly. Sometimes it just damages them and they fail a few weeks later.
Whole-House Surge Protector Installation
Installing a whole-house surge protector takes about an hour usually. We mount it right next to your electrical panel and wire it in properly. Some electricians just slap them on without checking your grounding system—that’s how you end up with protection that doesn’t actually work.
We test everything to make sure your grounding is good. If it’s not, we fix it first. A surge protector needs proper grounding to do its job. The surge has to have somewhere to go, and that somewhere is the ground wire.
Most whole-house surge protectors cost a few hundred dollars installed, depending on the size you need. Bigger homes with 200-amp service need bigger protectors. We recommend ones rated for at least 40,000 amps—anything less won’t handle a real lightning strike.
When to Replace Your Surge Protector
Here’s something most people don’t know—surge protectors wear out. Every time they stop a surge, they take damage. After enough hits, they stop working. Good ones have indicator lights that tell you when they’re done.
We replace surge protectors all the time that are 5-10 years old and have taken too many hits. If your light shows red or yellow instead of green, it needs replacing. If you had a major lightning strike nearby, get it checked even if the light looks ok.

The next day White’s plumbing dug the broken pipe out, removed the roots, replaced the pipe and did a camera inspection of the entire line leading to the house and into the street.
They were also able to successfully find the house clean out which was under a bush a landscaping contractor had covered up years ago. They raised the pipe and put on a new cover for the house clean out.
They communicated well, were thorough and prompt. They finished the day before our 5 inch snow storm.
Above all else they wanted us to be set before the snow came.
They were also very reasonable in price. The coordination between Keith, the office staff and the plumbers was great!
White’s is very responsive, exactly what you need and expect when you’re having plumbing problems. They showed up the same day we called them.
Eric came out to our house to fix an issue with a drain pipe and a water pipe. He was very professional! He called before he arrived and told us what time to expect him. He was on time! He was friendly and explained exactly what he was doing.
Eric’s troubleshooting skills are great. He started with the simple things to check and moved on from there. He was respectful of our property and only cut into the wall when there was no other choice. The way he was able to triage the issue, he was able to pinpoint the issue and only cut into the wall where necessary.
Once he found the issue, Eric was able to fix it quickly and using quality materials. It’s probably better than when it was first put in!
I highly recommend White’s Plumbing. If Eric services your area, ask for him!
