Faucet repair and replacement for Wake Forest homes

Faucet repair in Wake Forest, NC almost always comes down to one question: is the worn part inside worth replacing, or is the faucet itself finished? We answer that before we quote anything. Most drips are a cartridge, a seat and spring, or a set of O-rings — parts that cost very little and turn a faucet you already like back into a faucet that works.

The rest of the time the honest answer is faucet replacement. A twenty year old builder-grade fixture whose brand no longer makes the cartridge, sitting on shutoff valves that have seized open, is not a repair. It is a replacement, and pretending otherwise just means a second visit.

Our shop is on Park Avenue in Youngsville, about fifteen minutes up US 1, so Wake Forest and the rest of northern Wake County are a daily run for us. If a supply line has let go and you cannot stop the water, call the emergency line at (919) 316-0025 and stop reading.

What actually goes wrong inside a faucet

A faucet is a handful of small parts doing a hard job thousands of times a year. These are the ones that give out, roughly in the order we find them.

The cartridge

On a single-handle faucet, one cartridge controls both temperature and flow. When it wears, you get a drip that will not stop, a handle that has gone stiff or sloppy, or hot and cold that no longer mix the way they used to. It is the single most common faucet repair we do.

Seats, springs and O-rings

Two-handle faucets seal against a small rubber seat with a spring under it. Those flatten out and the faucet weeps from the spout. O-rings around the base fail differently — water appears around the handle or under the deck rather than out of the spout, which is the leak people usually notice last.

A worn valve stem or packing nut

Older compression faucets, common in homes built before the 1990s, use a stem with a washer at the bottom and packing at the top. A drip from the spout is the washer. A drip up around the handle when the water is running is the packing. They are different fixes and it is worth knowing which one you have.

A scaled-up aerator

Hard water leaves mineral scale on the little screen in the end of the spout. The stream goes weak, splits in two directions, or sprays sideways at the sink. This is the cheapest problem on the list and it is often mistaken for a pressure problem in the house.

The shutoff valve under the sink

In older homes toward Youngsville and Franklinton, the angle stops under the sink seize open and will not close. That turns a fifteen minute cartridge swap into a job that starts at the main. It is frequently the real reason a faucet repair costs more than the part suggests.

The outdoor hose bib

Our freezes are short but genuinely hard, and water trapped in a hose bib or in the pipe just inside the wall can split it over one cold night. Nothing shows until spring, when the valve gets opened and water runs into the wall or the crawl space instead of out of the spout.

If your water bill jumped, check the toilets before you blame the faucet. A dripping spout wastes water, but a worn toilet flapper wastes far more of it and costs less to fix. Start with our toilet repair page. If the bill climbed and every fixture in the house is behaving, the water is going somewhere you cannot see, and that is a job for leak detection rather than a new faucet.

How a faucet repair visit goes in Wake Forest

The point of the first fifteen minutes is to find out whether you are buying a part or a fixture, before anything is taken apart.

  1. Identify the faucet and find the water

Brand and valve type decide which parts exist. We check that at the same time as the shutoffs underneath, because a stop that will not hold changes the whole job and it is better to know that first.

  2. Open it up and find the worn part

Cartridge, seat and spring, O-rings, stem or aerator. On a two-handle faucet we replace the seats and springs alongside the cartridge, since a new cartridge sealing against a scored seat will drip again within months.

  3. Tell you which way it goes

If the parts are available and the body and shutoffs are sound, we repair it. If the brand is discontinued, the deck is corroded or the stops have failed, we say so and price the replacement instead of charging you for both.

  4. Reassemble, flush and check

New supply lines where the old ones are tired, aerator cleared or replaced, then we run both sides, check the flow and watch for seepage under the sink before we pack up.

Repair it or replace it — the honest answer for Wake Forest homes

There is no clever rule here, just a few things that decide it. Age and brand. A three year old faucet from one of the major manufacturers takes a cartridge and goes back to work for years. Parts availability. Plenty of builder-grade fixtures that went into Triangle subdivisions fifteen and twenty years ago are from brands that no longer supply the internals, and a universal part in a proprietary body is a callback waiting to happen.

What is underneath. If the shutoffs have seized and the supply lines are stiff, they are coming off either way — at which point a new faucet costs less in labor than a repair plus a valve job.

When the fixture goes, it is often worth doing the sink at the same time rather than twice; our sink and tub installation page covers that. And if the supply piping itself is the problem — galvanized or early copper in an older Youngsville or Franklinton home, with pressure dropping everywhere, not just at one faucet — then no faucet fixes it, and repiping is the real conversation.

Faucet work we handle across Wake Forest and Wake County

Leaky and dripping faucet repair

The drip that starts slow and ends up keeping someone awake. Cartridge, seats and springs, O-rings or stem, depending on what the faucet is.

Kitchen faucet installation

Pull-downs, single-handle mixers and bar sink faucets, including the sprayer hose and the quick-connect that so often leaks after a DIY swap.

Bathroom faucet replacement

Centerset, widespread and vessel faucets. Awkward access behind a vanity is most of the job, and it is the part people underestimate.

Outdoor faucet and hose bib repair

Frost-split bibs, weeping vacuum breakers and the pipe just inside the wall. If it is already running inside the wall, that is our 24/7 emergency plumbing line, not a scheduled visit.

Shutoff valves and supply lines

Angle stops that will not close and braided lines gone brittle. Replaced with the faucet so the next repair is a fifteen minute job instead of a shutdown.

Scale, iron staining and weak flow

Hard water is the regional constant here. When aerators and cartridges keep dying early, treating the water is cheaper than replacing parts forever — see water filtration and softeners.

Why Wake Forest homeowners call White’s

We will tell you to keep the faucet

If a cartridge fixes it, that is what we quote. Nobody needs to be sold a fixture because it is the bigger ticket.

Well water and town water both

Franklin County runs heavily on private wells and Wake Forest runs on town water. The mineral load, the pressure and the failure pattern differ, and we work on both every week.

Crawl spaces and slabs

Older homes on crawl spaces with galvanized or early copper, newer Wake Forest subdivisions on slab with PEX or CPVC. The faucet looks the same; what is behind it does not.

Plumbing and electrical in one truck

Water and wiring meet under a lot of sinks — a disposal, a hot water dispenser, an outlet in the cabinet. We are licensed for both, so it does not need a second contractor.

Discounts that apply here

We offer $50 off any plumbing repair, or 10% off for veterans and active duty military. Current amounts are on the specials page.

What Wake Forest customers say

Faucet questions from Wake Forest homeowners

How much does faucet repair cost in Wake Forest?

It depends far less on the part than on what it takes to reach it. A cartridge is a small, inexpensive piece, but a seized set screw, a corroded shutoff valve or a discontinued brand can turn a quick swap into real work. We look at the faucet, tell you what it needs, and quote the job before we start. Call (919) 435-0736 and describe what it is doing and we can usually tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a part or a fixture.

Should I repair my faucet or replace it?

Age, brand and the condition of the valves underneath decide it. A three year old faucet from a major brand takes a cartridge and goes back to work. A twenty year old builder grade faucet sitting on corroded shutoffs is a replacement, because the parts are often discontinued and the shutoffs will have to come off anyway. We will tell you which one you have rather than defaulting to the bigger job.

Why does my faucet still drip after a new cartridge?

Usually because the cartridge was not the only worn part. On a two handle faucet the rubber seat and the spring under it wear out as well, and a new cartridge sealing against a scored seat will keep weeping. Hard water scale also scratches the sealing surfaces over time. We replace the seats and springs along with the cartridge so the fix actually holds.

Does hard water cause faucet problems around Wake Forest and Youngsville?

Yes, and it is the single most common reason faucets here fail early. Scale builds up on the aerator screen first, which shows as a weak or sideways stream, then works into the cartridge and the sealing surfaces. Homes on private wells in Franklin County also carry iron and hardness that stain the fixture, while town water in Wake Forest is treated and carries chlorine instead. Either way, the mineral load is what shortens the life of the parts inside.

My outdoor faucet leaks when I turn it on. What is wrong?

That is the classic Triangle spring discovery. Our freezes are short but hard, and water left in a hose bib or in the pipe just inside the wall can split it over one cold night. Nothing shows until you open the valve in April and water runs inside the wall or under the crawl space instead of out of the spout. Shut the water off at the main and call us before you use it again.

Can a dripping faucet really raise my water bill?

A little, but it is rarely the main cause. The EPA puts the average household leak at more than 9,300 gallons a year and says fixing the easy ones saves about ten percent on a water bill. A running toilet flapper wastes far more than a dripping spout, so if your bill jumped sharply, check the toilets first and then call us.

Do you replace the shutoff valves under the sink as well?

Often that is the real job. In older homes toward Youngsville and Franklinton the angle stops seize open and will not hold, which means the faucet cannot be worked on until the valve is replaced. We carry supply lines and stops on the truck and handle both in the same visit rather than sending you a second invoice for it.

How soon can you get to a faucet repair in Wake Forest?

Our shop is on Park Avenue in Youngsville, about fifteen minutes up US 1 from downtown Wake Forest, so Wake Forest and the rest of northern Wake County are a daily drive for us. If a supply line has let go or a split hose bib is putting water into a wall and you cannot shut it off, call the 24/7 emergency line at (919) 316-0025.

One thing worth knowing before you buy a replacement. EPA WaterSense labeled bathroom sink faucets use a maximum of 1.5 gallons per minute against a standard 2.2, which the EPA reckons saves the average family around 700 gallons a year without any loss of performance. Worth noting that the label only covers bathroom sink and bar faucets — there is no WaterSense criterion for kitchen faucets, so ignore anyone who tells you otherwise.
