We size the unit to your fixtures and your winter water temperature, handle the gas, venting and wiring, and say plainly when a standard tank is the smarter buy.
Tankless water heater installation in Wake Forest is a good move for some houses and a poor one for others. The unit is the easy part. Your gas line, your venting options, your panel and how many hot taps run at once decide the job.
A tankless heater makes hot water on demand. Nothing sits in the garage reheating itself all day. You open a tap, a flow sensor fires the burner, and water heats as it moves through a heat exchanger. Close the tap and it stops.
We install these across Wake Forest, from slab-built homes off Rogers Road and Ligon Mill Road to older houses near White Street and South Main Street. Our shop is on Park Avenue in Youngsville, fifteen minutes up US 1. Our plumbing services page covers the rest of what we do.
Both do the same job. They fail differently and they cost money at different times.
Gas, vent and electrical work usually has to change, so tankless costs more to install. A like-for-like tank swap is the cheaper day.
Tankless units generally outlast a standard tank, and most parts are replaceable rather than throwaway. A tank that rusts through is done.
Nobody gets the short shower. That is what people notice first in a house with teenagers and one bathroom at the far end of the hot run.
Endless is not unlimited. Two showers plus a dishwasher can outrun an undersized unit, and then everything runs lukewarm at once.
On short draws you get a brief slug of cool water a second in. Warm, then cold, then hot. Normal behaviour, not a defect.
The unit hangs on a wall. In a Traditions or Jones Dairy Farm garage that is floor back, and no tank waiting to empty onto the slab.
We will tell you when to stay with a tank. If the gas line is undersized, the venting run is awkward and you are happy with the hot water you have, a straight tank replacement is the better value. Our water heater services page covers tank repair and replacement in Wake Forest.
Five things usually change, and any one of them can move the price.
The big one. A tankless burner draws far more gas at peak than a tank does, and most existing lines were sized for the tank. We measure the run back to the meter and upsize where it falls short.
Tankless units vent with their own approved pipe, straight out a side wall rather than up an old flue. Finding a wall with clearance from windows, doors and the meter drives the mounting spot.
Even a gas unit needs power for ignition, fan and board, normally on a dedicated circuit. We are licensed for electrical work too, so the circuit and the pipework happen on one visit.
Condensing units produce acidic condensate that has to be neutralised and routed to a drain. In a crawl space that run gets planned before the unit goes on the wall.
Garage or crawl space covers most Wake Forest homes. A garage is easier to service and to vent. A crawl space hides the unit but makes the annual flush harder and needs freeze protection settled first.
A tankless unit is sized by how much water you want hot at once, and how cold that water is when it arrives.
We add up what runs together on a bad morning. Two showers, a kitchen sink, a washer. That total flow sets the unit.
The unit has to lift incoming water to your set point. The colder that water, the less flow it can heat. This is where undersized units get sold.
Incoming water drops during a winter freeze snap. A unit sized on summer numbers feels fine in August and disappoints on the first cold weekend.
Well water changes the maths. Town water in Wake Forest and private wells out toward Franklinton and Louisburg do not share the same incoming temperature or mineral content, so we ask which you are on first. For neutral efficiency guidance, ENERGY STAR is a reasonable starting point.
Gas tankless is what we install in most Wake Forest homes that already have gas. It heats a high flow rate without touching your electrical service, so the work stays on the plumbing and venting side.
Electric is a different conversation. For a single point of use, a bar sink or a shop off Forestville Road, an electric unit is simple and works well. Whole-home electric is the heavy ask: heating every fixture with resistance elements draws a large continuous load, which usually means several big dedicated circuits plus the panel and service capacity to carry them. Plenty of older homes near downtown Wake Forest and along NC 98 do not have that without a service upgrade, and a service upgrade changes the budget. We hold both licences, so we check the panel on the same visit and give you one answer.
A tankless heat exchanger has narrow passages. Minerals leave scale on them, and scale both restricts flow and insulates the metal from the water it is meant to heat. The unit works harder, delivers less, and eventually throws an error.
An annual descaling flush is the fix and it is a short visit. It matters more on a private well, common once you head north into Franklin County, because that water often carries more mineral content than the town supply. Homes in Bishops Grant or The Lakelands on town water still need it, just less urgently. We fit isolation valves at installation so the flush stays quick.
If a unit fails and water is running where it should not, our 24/7 emergency plumbing service answers around the clock.
Building rather than replacing makes the decision cheaper, because the gas, vent and circuit get planned in from the start. Raise it early on a new construction plumbing job.
A tankless conversion is a plumbing job with an electrical job inside it. Licensed for both means one visit and one point of responsibility.
An undersized unit is the complaint we hear most about tankless, and it is a sizing failure, not a product failure.
If the numbers point at a tank, we say so. Selling the wrong heater into a Wake Forest house earns no second call.

We cover Wake Forest daily, plus Youngsville, Rolesville, Franklinton, Louisburg, Zebulon, Knightdale and north Raleigh. Downtown Wake Forest, near E. Carroll Joyner Park and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, is about fifteen minutes down US 1.
A tankless unit heats water only while a tap is running. There is no stored tank. A flow sensor fires a gas burner or an electric element, and the water heats as it passes through a heat exchanger. Close the tap and the unit shuts off.
It depends on the house and on how you use hot water. A tankless unit costs more to install, tends to outlast a standard tank, and will not run out mid shower. It also has a flow ceiling, so two showers plus a dishwasher can outrun an undersized unit. We check your gas line and venting first.
Usually more than swapping one box for another. Most conversions need a larger gas line back to the meter, a new vent through an exterior wall, a dedicated circuit for the controls, and a condensate drain. The unit is normally wall mounted in a garage or crawl space.
By flow rate and temperature rise, not by square footage. We add up the fixtures likely to run at the same time, then work out how far the unit has to lift the incoming water temperature. Groundwater here is colder in January than in July, so we size for the cold months.
For one sink or a single point of use, yes, and it is a simple job. A whole home electric unit is a much heavier electrical ask. It generally needs several large dedicated circuits and enough capacity at the panel to carry them. We hold both licenses, so we can tell you what your panel would need.
Yes. Scale builds up inside the heat exchanger and chokes both the flow and the heat transfer. An annual descaling flush clears it. That matters more on a private well, which is common north toward Franklinton and Louisburg, because well water here often carries more mineral content than town water.
It is a short slug of cool water that arrives a second after you open the tap. The water in the pipe is warm, the burner needs a moment to fire, and the water behind it is cold. You notice it on short draws. It is normal, not a fault.
Tell us what your house does with hot water and we will tell you which heater fits it.
